A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT AT .MAST HOPE ST A I ION, ON THE ERIE RAIL WA Y-ELE YEN PE It S O X S BURNED TO DEATH.Another fearful and appalling railroad disaster befel the Erie Kail way on Wednesday night at a little station known as Mast Hope, about midway between Lackawaxen and Narrowsburgh, and lid: miles from New York.Express train No. .3, which leaves Nfcw York at 6;o0 p. m.. bearing the through! ma.ils, composed of four sleeping coaches, 1 one lady’s coach, one smoking car, one postal, one baggage and one express car, and heavily laden with passengers, camn in contact with a freight train at MastHope station, resulting in one of the most terrible accidents which ever occurred upon any line of railway. A freight trainrunning west was upon the side track at1thia point to allow trains 7 and 3 to p:iss. Both trains were a little late, one being but a few minutes ahead of the other when on time. Train 7 passed, it is said on the time of train 3. The engineer of the freight train had been dozing, it is supposed, when rousing up, he started the train forward. He had just moved enough so that train 3, which came thundering along under full headway struck the engine of the freight train, just forward of the tender. The ex- ! press engine was thrown off the track to the left, pitching down a considerable embankment, and landing in a broken m:u*s i close against the depot building. The tender went to the right. Then postal and express cars wen; dashed upon the engine, lighting up from its arch-tires as if they were of tinder.The smoking car contained but a few%passengers, mostly German emigrants. The baggage car was smashed int the Smoking car, driving seats and pa-f© igcrs back in a mass toward tlio rear end, the wreck of the seats holding them fast until dead, wounded and living were alike a prey to the swift flames. Every possible effort was made to rescue the unfortunate passengers. AU were taken out except those in the smoking car. Bo far as is known, eight persons met their death in this ill- 1 fated car.
