By Rochelle Moore Times Staff Writer Urban planners and de sign consultants will be in Wilson this week to start the process of designing the Wallis Simpson Whirli gig Park. The park, which will be located on Goldsboro Street near the corner of South Street, will eventu ally be developed into a showcase location for 32 of Simpson’s early original works that comprise the personal collection he has at his farm in Lucama. Three consultants will be in Wilson today and Wednesday to meet with members of the Wilson Downtown Development Corp., Wilson Downtown Properties and the Whirli gig Park Planning Com mittee, said Kimberly Van Dyk, Wilson downtown manager. A information session and opportunity for the public to give input on the park design will be Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m., in the Hammond Gallery of the Edna Boykin Cultural Cen ter, 108 Nash St. The consultants visiting are Dan Gottlieb, director of planning and design for the N.C. Museum of Art; Kofi Boone, assistant professor of landscape ar chitecture, from N.C. State University; and Paul Mor ris, president of Greenleaf Strategies. “There’s a whole lot of work going on,” said Hen ry Walston, WDDC presi dent. “We’re going to start our fundraising program soon.” The project is estimated to cost $3 million and is expected to be paid for through donations, grants and city in-kind services, according to the WDDC budget. The acquisition and conservation of the whirligigs will cost $1.8 million. Van Dyk and Walston asked the Wilson County Tourism Develop ment Authority last week for $150,000 to go toward the cost of the park’s devel opment. “The consultants are volunteering their services for this project,” Van Dyk said. “They are being paid a small honorarium for which we have received donations.” times.com | 265-7818 An artist renders the look of the proposed whirligig center.
