Venice BPW host policewoman speakerDiane Graf, an officer with the Venice Police Department was guest speaker at the meeting of the Venice Area Business and Professional Women’s Club.Ms. Graf, who made her appearance at the club session wearing the new department official dress uniform, has been with the police department since Feb.13,1977.The young woman came to Venice from New York where she served with the 83rd precinct in the infamously tough Bedford-Stuyvesant district. She had an expert marksman rating with her .357 Magnum there, as well as special training in self defense.Although she was the first woman specifically joining the force here as a patrol officer, Mary Taylor, who has almost 10 years with the force starting as a dispatcher and moved up to a patrol officer prior to Diane’s arrival.President Margaret Curwood reported on the state conventionwhere the club picked up several citations for membership from the state and national.The club received a standing ovation at the Hog Callin’ breakfast where clubs present funds raised for the BPW scholarship house at Florida State University at Tallahassee, Mrs. Curwood reported.Each BPW club allocates $3 per member for the fund, but the standing ovation came when Mrs. Curwood gave a check for $500 from the club members in addition to the $75 club check, one of the largest contributions for any club that size, 25 members.A total of $10,000 was raised at the breakfast, and Marion Gould of Port Charlotte was reelected president of the Education Foundation for another year, Mrs. Curwood reported.The next meeting on August 9, will be on “Health Outlook for Women,” with Jane DeHaven in charge.
