Delta Democrat Times FRIDAY July 19, 1991 7BLOCAL SPORTSShotokan members advance to nationalsGreenville Shotokan Karate Club members black belt Tony Kelly, Amy Morris, junior black btelt Christopher Owens and Stephen Davenport brought home gold medals victories from this past weekend’s U.S.A. Karate Federation’s Atlantic League Championships at the University of Akron (Ohio).The regional event was a qualifier for the 1991 U.S.A. Karate Federation National Championships scheduled for Aug. 2-4 for The New Orleans (La.) Hilton Riverside and Towers.The quartet plus 11 other students of chief instructors Jerry Sr. and Millie Kattawar competed in the regionals. The 14, plus others, advanced to the Akron event through the U S A Karate Federation State tournament at the Hodding Carter Memorial YMCA. The Greenville *Y’ sponsors the Shotokan club.Kelly and Morris also picked up a silver medal apiece.Kelly won his gold in 16-year-old boys’ advanced kumite (sparring) and his silver in the same division in kata (form).Morris captured her gold in 15-year-old girls’ intermediate kata and her silver in the same division in kumite.Owens earned his gold in nine-year-old boys' advanced kata and a bronze in kumite in the same division.Davenport took his gold in 17-year-old boys’ beginner’s kata, while taking a bronze medal in kumite in the same divisionOthers who qualified for the nationals and their places are as follows:— Shawn Conguista won a silver in both kata and kumite in the 14-year-old boys’ beginner’s class.— Cleotha Williams placed second in 10-year-old boys’ intermediate kumite— Darrell Nash won a silver medal in 16-year-old boys' beginner kumite.— Derek Vaught, a national champion in kumite and a silver winner as a seven-year-old last year, picked up a bronze in eight-vear-old advanced kata. while finishing seventh in kumite in thesame division.— Jill Sullivan brought home a bronze medal in eight-year-old intermediate kumite, while picking up a sixth in kata in the same division.— Doug Bishop Jr. scored a fifih in kumite and a seventh in kata, both in the 11-ycar-old boys’ intermediate division.— Black belt Quinton Williams finished sixth in 32-year-old men's black belt heavyweight kumite.— Black belt Dennis Keys qualified for the nationals in men’s black belt kata and men’s black belt middleweight kumite, although not placing in the top six— Junior Black belt Everett Guess qualified for the nationals in 16-year-old boys’ advanced kata, although not placing in the top six.— Black belt Hervain Sullivan qualifield for the nationals in both 50-year-old Executive kata and kumite, although not finishing in the top six.All participants who finished in the top 12 qualifield for the nationals in the regional competition.Competing and qualifying for the Aug. 2-4 U.S.A.
