Last rites held for George HaysLast rites for George William Hays were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning at the United Methodist Church in Thompson. Officiating clergy was the Rev. Joan Skyrme.Comforting music was provided by organist Eleanor Roper. Rev. Skyrme sang “Rock of Ages” and “Just A Closer Walk With Thee. The congregation joined in ”Blest Be the Tie That Binds”.Casket bearers Included Timothy Hays, David Leavitt, Doug Mayiand, James Wilson, Alfred Mayiand, Marvin Rossiter and Oris Graue.Honorary casket bearers were Edgar Charlson, Bob DeVries. Steve Waite, Albin Anderson, Jack DeVries and Emery Llllebo.Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.The son of William C. and Chloe (Mitchell) Hays, George Hays was bom May 16, 1900, at Loogoottee, Indiana. His mother died when he was two years old. He attended rural schools in southern Indiana before moving with his family to northern Iowa in 1913.Hays worked as a farm hand around Eagle Grove and then lived with his family on various farms in the Thompson area.He was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Thompson.On Feb. 7, 1923, he was married to Mae Rossiter. The couple farmed near Scarville and moved to the present farm southwest of Thompson in 1929. The couple had five children. Mrs. Hays died in 1975.Besides farming, he was engaged in the business of buying and selling livestock for many years.George William Hays died July 9, 1990, at North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City. He was 90 years of age.Those who survive him include his five children, Harold and his wife Phyllis Hays of Thompson, Dorothy and her husband Robert Hetiunyeof Des Moines, Betty and her husband Jerald Palmer of Choteau, Montana, Helen and her husband Edward Southhard of Clarion, and Leone and husband Glen Leavitt of Shell, Wyoming; twelve grand children; ten great-grandchildren; along with a long-time friend, Ada Uvaag of Thompson and her son. Bob Bray and family of Lake Mills, whom Hays considered family.He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, step-mother, two brothers, three sisters and one son-in-law.
