MANITOWOC — Officials of] the Manitowoc Maritime Muse um announced plans Wednesdays ‘for issuance of a series of hand ‘blown glass collectors bottles: lommemorating Great Lakes’, ships and historical events. Four bottles in quantities of. 999 each are scheduled for is uance during 1972. Each year thereafter a set of eight bottles,, in the same quantities will bel ‘issued. r Collectors ordering the com plete 1972 set will be eligible to.’ receive a special limited edition bottle whose description will be’, disclosed later Help for Museum Robt Weluda, committee chairman, said that the collec tors bottle sale is being adver tised throughout the nation. Bot tles will be ‘available at a cost of $795 each to association, members and $8.95 to the gener al public They are being manu factured by a New Jersey firm. Orders are now being accept ed at the museum at 402 N. Eighth St. or by calling 684-8381, Welnetz said { Proceeds from the bottle sale will be placed in the museum's’ ‘building fund. The museum must move from its present ‘quarters sometime next year) and the sale of bottles is one of the many ways used to keep it tself supporting, according to* Welnett. The first bottle will commem orate the Christopher Columbus, s most famous passenger ship to sail the Great Lakes. Built in, 1893, she was the only whale's back passenger ship ever con structed and served millions of passengers before meeting her fate at Manitowoc in 1937. Will Record Wrecks The second bottle will com memorate the greatest storm ever to hit the Great Lakes in 1913. It claimed 17 vessels and the lives of 244 persons. The names of all wrecked ships will be listed on the back of the bot tle. The Court, largest ship ever built and sailed on the Great Lakes, will be the subject of the third bottle. Statistics and di mensions of the ship will be re corded on the bottle. The final issue of 1972 will commemorate the steamship ‘Eastland disaster.
