A Mercer County medical ex miner is in the process of per forming an autopsy on the body of Ira Mathena, who was be lieved to be involved in the April robbery of the Bluefield home of C. A. Clyborne. Randall Veneri, assistant Mer cer County Prosecuting Attorney, Saturday said the body was ex humed Friday at 10 a.m. at a cemetery in Green Valley. Mathena died this past March after what was described as a short illness, but officials appear to have uncovered evidence which lead them to believe Mathena died of violent causes. Veneri said Saturday that Mer cer County Medical Examiner Dr. David Bell is performing an autopsy on the body, ‘‘but a report won't be available for some time, I'm sure.” Veneri said various county officials, in cluding Dave Warden, Bluefield agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and E. R. (Shorty) Simons, special deputy for the prosecuting attorney’s office, were present at the ex humation. It was also rumored that por tions of the $300,000 taken from the Clyborne home during the robbery last April may have been placed in the Mathena casket but Veneri said “the of ficials found nothing like that.” Veneri would not confirm rum ors that authorities believe Ma thena was involved in some way in the robbery, but the exhuma tion is believed to have been ordered for that and other rea sons.
