Bandera Recreation Center DedicatedBandera’s new $125,000 Recreation Center was dedicated lastSaturday in the fine new recreation hall. The program was opened with music by Los Gringos, Bandera’s own band, composed of Dr. George D. Meador, Frank Montague, Jr., Jimmy Russell, Art Kitzman and JoeKitzman, and for the special occasion, guest singer, Bob Bartonof Kerrville.Judge Roy Adams spoke a fewwords of welcome to the assembly and introduced members of the Commissioners’ Court who were instrumental in securing the Recreation Center: Commissioners W. B. Joiner, H. W. (Buddy) Hubble, Stanley Tschirhart. Commissioner Curley Thompson was unable to attend.Introduced also were L. F. Guseman, president of the Recreation Association, Telvy Robbins, Felix Billings, Bill Short,Bub Keese, Ray Wharton, Scooter Fries, directors and Sam Darden and Glendon Roberts, attor-neys for the Association.Jim Cresswell, of the Farmer’sHome Administration next spoke and named members of his organization who assisted in securing the loan which was used to buy and build the Center: Marliss Baker, Mr. and Mrs. John Foster, of Kerrville; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hart of Uvalde; L. J. Capplemann and Mrs. Lucille Holdsworth of the Kerrville Office.Next introduced wras Peter Herff, of Congressman 0. C. Fisher’s San Antonio office.Then our Congressman, 0. C. They drifted westward to New Mexico.Bandera County, with its beautiful streams and verdant hill-crime in America is estimatedat around $25 billion.The tragic and senseless murder of Senator Kennedy a few days ago shocked the nation into a further awareness of the presence of the criminal-minded insides beckoned the buccaneeringspirit of the pioneers, and became the scene of many struggles forsurvival during those days which nreceded the establishment oflaw' and order.our society and. let us hone, areappraisal of the pampering and coddling which has been accorded too many who thus refuse to be bound bv the rules of a dis-* * *In preserving a record of the historic nuggets of the past, we of today are everlastingly indebted to the late and lamented J. Marvin Hunter. Indeed, notcipimcu tjc.Cty. It spotlighted one horrible murder—one among scores of others which are lessonly Bandera County but muchof Texas and the great southwest shares in the obligation to the memory of Mr. Hunter. Hepossessed a sense of history and patiently went about the job of collecting and preserving many irreplaceable gems of frontier and pioneer history. Except for his foresightedness and his alertness many of these eventswould have passed into oblivion. So today as we meet here todedicate this magnificient building let us pay this word of tribute and gratitude to the memory of that great and distinguished Texan—J. Marvin Hunter.I congratulate the people ofBandera County for the building of this beautiful structure. Itwill undoubtedly contribute immeasurably to the enjoyment of community life. For years and years it will stand as a mark of progress and a citadel ofcooperative action.In this time of street mobs andpublicized^-Let me cite an example: Senator Kennedy was shot at 3:15 on a Wednesday morning-Exactly 15 minutes earlier three men entered the Little Tavern in Washington’s Georgetown district, and, without provocationor warning, shot and killed two young Marine lieutenants, and wounded another Marine and a girl. The other youthful Marines escaped the fusillade; of 7 shots that were fired.The Marines, fresh from asocial event and dressed in starched white uniforms, with a young lady, were sitting at a counter sipping coffee, tendingto their own business. Three bearded Negroes came in. One of them made an ugly remark about a name on one of the Marine’s uniforms. Words were exchanged. The three intruders went to the door as if to leave, then wheeled around and firedthe fatal shots.It will be recalled that a fewriots, of violence and crime, it is refreshing and reassuring to witness a community of patriots, where the people believe in and practice Law' and Order.A murder is committed every hour of the day and night, somewhere in America. A rape is reported every 23 minutes. Indeed, 5 serious crimes will be committed every minute of this day.months ago the President appointed a Commission on Civil Disorders, charged with finding the cause of riots. A good manj of us, after seeing the name: of the appointees, had misgiving: about their ability and willing ness to face up to the real is sues involved. An sure enough after spending a million dollar: it came up with practieall; nothing. Amid political over tones it blamed the whole blood;IThe annual price tag placed onmess on the white people in ou society, leaving those who ac tually did the rioting virtuall; blameless. It even criticized thFill Gravelpolice for being too diligent am suggested that officers should b stripped of anti-riot guns.
