John C. (Bud) Smith, who wrote the University of San Francisco fight song, “On to Victory,” died in a local hos pital yesterday after a long ill ness. Smith, resident of Marin County for seven years, was a retired special investigator for the Department of Agriculture. He graduated from the Univer sity of San Francisco in 1931 and took his law degree there in 1935. A native of San Francisco, Smith was 53. He served as di rector of the Marin Catholic Youth Organization in 1956 and was a member of these San Francisco organizations: the Dons Club, Knights of Colum bus, the Ignatians and the Young Men's Institute. He moved with his family from San Francisco to Marin seven years ago. They lived most re cently at 333 Willow Avenue, Corte Madera. Smith leaves his wife, Vir ginia; two daughters, Jane and Virginia, and three sons, John Cyril Smith Jr. and Michael James Smith, both students at University of California at Berkeley, and Robert E. Smith. Friends may call at Duggan’s funeral home, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City, tomorrow and Saturday. Funeral services will be held Monday at Our Lady of Mercy Church, San Francisco, with time pending.
