The Port Arthur Lions Club was organized mainly because someone in Beaumont back in 1918 made the “crack” that Port Arthur was too small for a Lions club. In exactly one day the Internation al organized and had the 25 necessary charter members. Thus begun eight years ago the history of one of Port Arthur's leading luncheon clubs, A. W. Dycus was named the first president of the Lions Club and C. V. Palmer secretary, in February 1918, at the first meeting. That fall the two officials went to Dallas as rep resentatives of the local club at the International convention. Since then Lions have made history here. Any civic movement asks early endorsement from the Lions on the theory that their cooperation is a long step toward success, whatever the movement. To recount what the Lions Club has done in Port Arthur during its eight years of existence is to first say it has lent aid to all worthwhile pro jects. Those of its own that it has sponsored are many and only a few of the major ones it is necessary to mention. After the flood in 1915, Port Ar thur’s yards, from the standpoint of trees and flowers, were in a bad way. The Lions decided to bring Port Ar thur’a former beauty back and began with an unique system. The Lions Club bought hundreds of the finest rose cuttings and sold them at cost. A campaign to have every house owner in the city plant the roses was successful to a large ex tent. These rose campaigns contin ued every spring for several years. The result has been that hundreds of Port Arthur yards now have roses and shrubbery through Lions’ efforts. The outstanding civic achievement of the Lions Club has been the de velopment of Lions park. This spot, which faces both Procter and Lake Shore drive and is near the high school, was once just a big unsightly marsh. The Lions gained permission to develop this spot for the city. The Lions park didn't reach its present beauty and sightliness in a day. It was a process of several years to develop it and bring it to its now beautiful stage. In all, the Lions club has spent more than $6,000 on the park. Shrub bery and trees were planted and new grass made to grow and a $5,000 band stand was built. This park, Lions park, is now the beauty spot of Port Arthur and a fitting memorial daily showing the club's activity. Other civic enterprises have been put over. Some of the best home talent plays ever shown here have been given by the Lions. The Lions now have a member in practically every trade and profes sion in town. The roster is kept at 75 members. Many of the leaders of Tort Arthur's activities are to be seen every Friday noon at the Plaza week ly luncheon. To tell of what the Lions Club as an international organization stands for is probably repetition, as there are more than 8,000 clubs in the world today. Just to say Port Ar thur’s Lions club is typical and among the best is sufficient. George Lomax this month succeed ed R. L. Murray as president; D. J. Russell took Dr. BE. W. Vaughan’s place as vice president. L. J. Pan chal after serving four terms as sec retary, this month was succeeded by Lee McClurkin as secretary. KE. P. ‘Tucker is treasurer.
