Orme threshed an average of 1,300 sacks a day during all last week, and on Friday he turned out 1,650 sacks. He says the crop in the lower part of the valley is light this year, not running over 1,000 pounds to the acre.— Phenix Gazette. The board of supervisors has ap pointed an expert to visit Jerome to determine the value of the plant of the United Verde Copper Com pany with a view of having the same listed on the assessment roll at a proper valuation. James R. Liston came in yester day from the Old Reliable mine. He says that during the forest fire there last Sunday, a large snake was frightened from its hiding place. From the trail it left in the dust and the size of the curves made in traveling, it was estimated to be about eight or ten inches in diame ter, and fifteen or twenty feet long. In speaking of the last time made on the New York Central road, says the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, an expert railroad man remarked re cently: “The New York Central has the best natural grade in the coun try. It is practically a water grade from Buffalo to New York, which explains how the company is able to operate the line on so small a per cent of its gross earnings.” Terrence J. Connelly, a private soldier recently discharged from Captain Maklin's company at Whi ple, attempted to commit suicide yesterday morning, by cutting his throat. Since being discharged from the army, Connelly has lived a life of dissipation, and wound up by breaking into the canteen at Whip ple and stealing a lot of beer. It was on account of having been dis covered in this act, that he conclud ed life was not worth — living, and attempted to shuffle off the mortal coil. The Vanderbilt nugget is the name of a new paper just started at the flourishing mining camp of Vanderbilt, California. The editor and proprietor is Will. A. Nash, well known all over Arizona, having been formerly engag in the news paper business in Tombstone. ‘The first issue is full of news and is a beauty from a spoarepeicil stand point. Among the announcements contained in the Nugget, is the law card of L. F. Eggers, formerly of Prescott, and a saloon advertise ment of Virgil Earp, who is by no nouns a stranger to Arizonans. Telegraphic instructions were re ceived last evening from W. A. Clark, of the Uni Verde Copper Company, to have all freight to and from the United Verde mine ship ped over the 5. F., P. P. railroad. The freight will be transferred at Granite station. Carpenters were put at work today putting in a new platform and maying other in rovements for handling the freight. The business averages between thir ty and forty car loads per week, there being from fifteen to twenty car loads of coke brought in each week, while the shipment of bullion amounts to about as much more besides the shipment of merchan dise. A well known citizen of Prescott celebrated the Fourth of July by getting brimful of patriotism and other fiquids. Prior to that time he was an inveterate smoker, and there were very few minutes in the day that he did not have a pipe in his mouth. He was also addicted to “having a good jolly time with the boys” occasionally, as he states, Since recovering from the effects of the celebration on the Fourth, he has had no desire whatever to smoke, while the very thought of whisky is offensive to him. He says he has not the remotest idea what pro duced this condition of his system, but he says it beats the Keeley treatment all to pieces, and there is no discount on that. A meeting of physicians was held at Hotel Burke, last night, and an organization was effected, known as the Yavapai County Medical So ciety. Dr. J.N. McCandless, who is the oldest practitioner in the county, and one of the oldest in the territory, having come to Arizona in the early days, was honored by being elected as president of the society. Dr.J. Miller was elected vice president, and Dr. C. A. Sewall secretary, Drs. Maller, Davis and Sew all were appointed a committee to draft a constitution and by-laws, when the society adjourned, to meet this evening at the office of the president. James Mahoney, the miner of the , ae Hassayampa, was in town to day. There are about 150 men cee ed now on the grade of the S. F., P. P. railroad. The wife and two sons of Carl Schultz arrived on last evening's train, from Cincinnati. C. A. Green, the wide awake in surance agent, went to Jerome last night with H. J. Allen. Have you seen the comet? If not look in the northwestern heaven at any time after 9 o'clock and you can see it. Dr. E. W. Dutcher will leave for the east tomorrow to return with Mrs. Dutcher, who has not been well since her visit there. Good rain showers have been re ported in various portions of the county around Prescott. As yet the rainfall in Prescott has been very slight. The first freight over the Santa Fe road for the United Verde Ca per Company at Jerome was brought in today, consisting of four car loads , of coke. It is estimated that Phenix will spend $100,000 at the Pacific seaside resorts this season, not to speak of the Worlds’ Fair travelers who are going out toward the east. Terrence coos who slashed his throat and cut his wrists, two days ago at Whipple, with suicidal intent, is on the highway to recov ery. His wounds were sewed up . Dr. Pope, the post surgeon, guards have been placed over him to prevent his opening the wounds again. A petition was circulated yester day among patrons of the public schools, asking that Miss Florence could be reinstated in her former position, as teacher in the public school. The petition was signed by every one to whom it was empied jt being the unanimous request of our people that she be re tained in her former position. The Jounat-Mixer has not yet heard of a single complaint against Miss Gould, as a teacher, but on the con trary both, the pupils in her room, as well as their parents, are highly leased with her as a teacher. It is hoped that the board of trustees may see their way clear to gratify the wishes of the patrons of the public school, by reinstating Miss Gould in her former position. Judge French has completed a compilation of the school census, from which it appears that there are 1,326 white children and 20 colored, between the ages of 6 and 18 in Yavapai county. Of these 979 whites and 10 colored have attended the white schools during the 1. forty white and two colored were attended a private school; 248 white and 8 colored have not attended any school; 59 have attended a denomi national school, Sareepar’s Dany. S.C. Miller was able to be in town today. Bids for fuel will be opened at , Whipple next Tuesday. The board of supervisors have a new clock in their room. Jones lost another child yesterday from diph thera. This is the third visit that the “grim reaper” has made to this family, each time taking one of their loved ones. Julius Becker, a prominent citizen of Springerville, Apache county, died July 8 One report of his death alleges heart failure as the cause, another an accidental over dose of morphine to allay pain, while the third report calls it suicide. John Roark is raising a subscrip tion to aid Sam Gray in securing legal aid in his defense on the charge of killing Mr. Fry. Charles Flinn, of Winslow, who arrived here yesterday states that it has rained every day for fifteen days in Apache county. Charles L. Flinn, a merchant of Winslow, came in on yesterday's train in obedience to a summons from the United States Court that he was wanted for jury duty. Mrs. Anna McGowan took charge of the Williams House this morning. She will renovate it thoroughly and will furnish first class accommo dations to the public. Mrs. A. J. Hughes, wife of Rail road Contractor Hughes, left for the east yesterday. Mr. Hughes ex pects to join her in a few weeks. The Groom Creek school, Aztlan school district, will open on Mon day, August 7, Mrs. A. O. Elliott having been employed as teacher. Geo. H. Cook, the Flagstaff and Prescott jeweler, and John Datis, of Williams, came in on the noon train to play. Complaint has been filed before Judge Fleury, by Charles R. Baine, against Archie Campbell, for stab bing him in the bowels with a knife. A warrant was issued for his arrest. Hasteed Teel, one of the Navajo Indians who recently took an allot ment of land in the Prescott land office, was killed July 5, at Tuba City, by the accidental discharge of a pistol. A shooting scrape occurred yes terday in Chinatown, in which the Chinese cook at the county hospital took a shot at a fellow coutryman, but failed to hit him. The shooter was arrested and is now in jail. Tom Morris,*the Santa Ana, Cali fornia, cyclone,” won the Colum bian sweepstakes 100-yard foot race last Saturday, beating the world’s record, in nine and three-fifths sec onds. “Our Mineral Wealth” is the name of Kingmans new paper. The first issue was published July 14 and is a splendid paper. J. A. Whitmore, an old newspaper man, is its editor, while Keanu St. Charles appears as mining editor of the paper. We Wish success to the new venture. Court Perry, train-master at Will iams,came in on yesterday's train, being his first visit to Prescott. Mr. Perry was formerly a conductor on the A. P. railroad, and found a host of friends in Prescott whom he had transported at some time or other over the above road. Warren Hardenburg, Jr., expects to leave in a few days for the east, on account of Mrs. Hardenburg’s ill health. Mr.and Mrs. Harden burg came here five or six months ago, expecting the climate to have a beneficial influence on the latter's health, but the result has not been as anticipated. Since their arrival here, Mr. Harenburg, in addition to looking after his sick wife, has shown a disposition to do anything that offers in the way of making a living, and has shown himself pos sessed of excellent rustling quali ties. The Courier this morning, after indulging in a pope covering a century for its fulfilment, anent railroad matters, concludes with the assertion: “This is a fact.” He is recommended to turn to his often quoted authority, “Webster's Un abridged,” for the statement of rail way matters, under the head, fact, where, unless he has a garbled edi tion, he will find that prophecy and fact are not synonyms. How would it do to amend his statement with his favorite railroad epithet, and substitute “proposed” fact. Messrs. La Prade and Morgan, members of the Board of Supervis ors of this county, will attend the next meeting of the Territorial Board of Equalization for the pur pose of ee body to let the assessment of the Atlantic Pacific Railroad Company stand at the same figures as last year. The rail road has refused to pay the tax on the valuation fixed by the Terri torial Board and this county is not in a financial condition to go to law to collect the tax, neither can it get along, under the Harrison act, un less the tax is paid. Before raising the valuation on this road, the Territorial Board should have con sulted the Supervisors of the four counties through which it runs as to the advisability of doing so.—St. Johns Herald. The regular train with mail and express arrived at $15 p. m. The purse won by Tom Morris in the east recently was $2,000 in ad dition to a diamond medal. Fry at Black Canyon, was bound over in the sum of $1,000. Gray is quite ill and District Attor ney Morrison has applied to the supervisors to have him admitted to the county hospital. “How to see the World’s Fair with little money” is the title of a little pamphlet published by M. Parker, Chicago, Ilinois, and which can be had for 25 cents, L[f some one will provide the information, “How to obtain a little money to visit the World's Fair,” we may oet able to see the big show. A telegram from Tucson of Jul 15 says the heaviest rainfall the year set in here tonight, and seems to be general. The report has been received that there was a terrific storm and downpour to the east of Tucson and a serious washout re sulted on the Southern Pacific road between Bowie and Wilcox, which will delay the west bound train, due here at 10 o'clock, until tomor row and probably later.
