The Grand Jury of St, Louis refer in a recently issued report to tile repeal of the “Social Evil Law,” and say that crimes have greatly increased since its repeal. Does the Grand Jury imagine that lt;the “social evil” can be stamped out by law ? If so itis in error. The social evil, as prosti-*tution is called, has its origin in the present system of society, andcannot be stamped out among women any more than drunkenness and theft among men. Every crime that to-day curses society has its origin in our economical subjection. When human beings are treated fairly, when parents have an opportunity of feedingtheir honest industry instead of having it stolen from them—when men and women work less hours—then indeed the social evil will disappear because its causes will have passed away. Let the St. Louis Grand Jury recommend an Eignt Hour Law and take other steps for the improvement of the material condition Of the people and they will do something practical towards the abolition of the I social evil. —Labor Standard.
