By SHAWN WANSLEY SPORTS EDITOR The Laurel-Jones County Dixie Pre-Majors All- Stars picked up a win in the opening round of the State Tournament Saturday afternoon at Lonnie J. Hosey Field. And they did not even have to throw a pitch. Moss Point, LJC’s scheduled opponent, did not show up, giving the home team a victory by forfeit. The same thing happened at about the same time ‘in the Dixie Majors State Tournament, which is being held at Wooten Legion Field, just up the road from Hosey Field. _ Purvis notched a forfeit victory over East Central when the latter team failed to appear. According to tournament rules, both Moss Point and East Central will remain in the bracket because, technically, they could show up to play today. In games that were actually played Saturday, in Dixie Majors action, Hattiesburg edged Meridian, 5-3, and Wesson whipped Clarksdale, 10-3. The Laurel-Jones County Dixie Majors team met Jackson in a late game. In the Pre-Majors Tournament, Lamberton knocked off Kosciusko, 14-4, and Lawrence County shut out Cleveland, 10-0. Meridian faced Southwest Mississippi in a late game. DIXIE MAJORS Hattiesburg 5, Meridian 3 Meridian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. But, Hattiesburg scored three runs to take the lead and added another in the fifth. Chase Herrin doubled and singled for Hattiesburg, while Brett Lefan doubled and Josh Wiley and Josh Chatman added singles. Collin Cargill pitched into the seventh and post ed the win. Jermaine Jackson got a save. Kedrick Martin singled three times for Meridian. Chris Harris, Lindsey Spinks and Anthony Linton added singles. Linton was the starter and loser. He was relieved in the fifth by Martin. Wesson 10, Clarksdale 3 Wesson led 4-1 after two innings and 4-2 after four. However, they put the game away with a five run fifth. Micah Davis, Joseph Langham, Daniel Watson and Brian Channell had two singles each for Wesson. Wade Williams and Chance Peets each doubled, while Brandon Hood and Corey Puckett each singled. Puckett went the distance and posted the win. Jesse Spinks, Nathan Dancey, Neil Mitchell and Andy Parks each singled for Clarksdale. Spinks was the starter and loser, while Patrick Browning also pitched. Today’s games Meridian faces Clarksdale NEN net Central — if they show up — will meet the Laurel- Jones County/Jackson loser at 2:30. The Laurel- Jones County/Jackson winner faces Purvis at 7:30, while Hattiesburg battles Wesson at 5. DIXIE PRE-MAJORS Lumberton 14, Kosciusko 4 Lumberton led 3-0 after one, 5-0 after three, 8-2 after four, 10-3 after five and 11-4 after six. Zach Cobb doubled and singled for Lumberton, while Cord Rogers singled twice. Rashad Henry, Anthony Harry, Kody Lancaster, Eric Alexander, Kyle McCardle and Caylon Sibley added singles. Harry went the distance and got the win. Craig Pee and Cody Reynolds each homered for Kosciusko in the fourth inning. Bubba Horne dou bled twice, while Will Browning doubled. Jamie Boyette and Thomas Mitchell added singles. Browning was the starter and loser. Reynolds came on in relief in the sixth. Lawrence County 10, Cleveland 0 Toby Smith tripled twice and Nick Jackson dou bled twice to lead Lawrence County. Trent Hartzog and Jonathan Stephens added doubles and Marty Ballard singled. Evans went the first three innings and got the win. Hartzog came on in the fourth and McKenzie Wood entered in the sixth. Andy Murphy singled twice for Cleveland.
