General Telephone Company of the Southwest employee Vevelyn Perkins of Hobbs received special rec yirtion on June 20, 1985 for her efforts and assistance during an emergency situation in Ovinber .Vet. E.L. “Buddy” Langley, Presi dent of General Telephone Company of the Southwest, from San Angelo, Texas, presented the company operator with a LaCroix Certificate of Meritorious service and a check for $250.00 during a luncheon on June 20 at the Holiday Inn Civic Center in Lubbock, Texas. The award was presented for actions that occurred Oct. 31, 1984. As reported in the Nov. 1, 1984 Hobbs News-Sun, Perkins received an call from a man asking for help. The man said he was choking. Perkins attempted to obtain a name and address, but the man could not answer. She then called the ambulance while continuing to seek information. She was finally able to get a first name and an address. Since the fire department was already on line, efforts were made to find the man. However, the address given was not complete and it took additional ime for the man to be located. Paramedics were able to administer first aid and to get the man into the ambulance, but he then went into full cardiac arrest. The attendants used a cardio pulmonary resuscitation twice to restore breathing. Perkins received praise for her efforts to sufficiently revive the man to get a general idea of where the emergency was taking place and what it was. Company offi cials said that if it had not been for the persistence of Perkins, the man would not be alive today. “If she had not been able to talk the address out of him, there would have been no way to reach him in time to save his life,” Langley said. In reviewing how GTE employees are selected to receive LaCroix awards, Langley said, “All factors are weighed care fully by various levels of manage ment to ensure awards are made to employees who render service above and beyond their normal duties. Verelyn Perkins met these qualifications as well as demonstrating the the meaning of being a good neighbor.’ The LaCroix Certificate of Meritorious Service is presented to GTE employees “who perform an action involving courage, initia tive, decisiveness and a keen sense of responsibility.” The award received by Perkins is one of four given “in recogni tion of eminent performance which contributes substantially toward controlling or modifying an emergency or crisis.” The award is named for the late Morris Felton LaCroix, founder of the General System and from 1940 until 1945, chairman of what is now GIF. President Langley was in aster of ceremonies at the luncheon. Included among guests were GTSW dignitaries Clark Barlow VP - Customer Service; Harry Elam, VP - Field Operations; Joe Collyns, VP - Public Affairs; and Jerry Crowley, General Manager in the Western Division Left to right: Mable Fields; Clyde Perkins; Vevelyn Perkins; President Langley; Evelyn McCrimmon and Flossie MacKey.
