CCC Worker Attacked While Asleep in Park, Suffers Knife Wounds. Wayie Rodgers, member of the CCC company at Camp Harrison for soil conservation work, was stabbed in the left arm and suf fered a cut on his face when he was attacked by Lee Wilhelm of Harrison and a companion named East, while asleep in the court park Sunday afternoon. Rodgers with a companion, Lewis Matthews, were lying in the park asleep, when Wilhelm and East, both of them intoxicated, kicked Rodgers and told him to get up, that they wanted to whip him. Rodgers walked to the street and Wilhelm followed, brandishing a knife. Matthews ran from the two to avoid trouble, so Rodgers told officers that he tried to persuade Wilhelm to go home because he was drunk, but Wilhelm insisted on fighting. Rod gers was stabbed in the left arm and then struck on the face by East. Rodgers said he struck Wil helm and knocked him to the pavement. Meanwhile a number of CCC boys and local people had gathered around, but nobody appeared willing to stop the fight, and there were no officers in sight. Wilhelm be came bloody, and minor knife wounds were inflicted on other CCC members who got too close to him .Finally a justice of peace persuaded several spectators to overpower Wilhelm and carry him to jail. It was learned afterward that most of the officers, county, township and city, were out at the baseball park, where a game was in progress. Wilhelm and East are held in the county jail on assault and battery charges, and will be brought before the Circuit Court grand jury, which went into sessions this morn ing.
