Davis Cuf TtamBEAUTIFUL tennis weather and an enthusiastic crowd greeted the efforts of the Canadian Davis Cup team at Victoria last Saturday afternoon. Messrs, Powell and Sehwengers were opposed by their fellow club-mates, Messrs, Harrison and Garrett, and, though the latter were beaten in three straight sets, they were by no means disgraced. The cup team went off at a tremendous gait. Sehwengers* drives and Powell's overhead smashing being of the first quality* and the first set went to them at 6-2.In the second set Garrett and Harrison both showed improvement, Garrett's cross court drives were of the prettiest, and Harrison, as usual, was a dream at the net. Still the chosen pair were not to be denied, Powell and Schwcngcrs winning the second set 6-4,The third set showed tennis as it has never been played before on the Victoria courts, the Davis Cupitcs having to go to the limit to win out 6-4. Great credit is due to Garrett and Harrison for the beautiful game they put up against such strong adversaries. Sehwengers* backhand shots and powerful service were never seen to better advantage, and Powell’s accurate placing and killing of all loose balls was a revelation to the onlookers, The Victoria club may well be proud of such a quartette of tennis players. The final of the women’s doubles. Class “B,M was won by Mrs. Patterson. who defeated Miss Little 6-2, 9-7. The latter made a gallant fight in the second set, but Mrs. Patterson’s great steadiness on the base line brought her through triumphant. The final of the men's doubles. Class “A,” was won hy H. G, Garrett and 1C. McCallum, who beat Harrison and C. Schwcngcrs 6-1, 6-2.
