Upon this outside territory a tax is levied for such purpose of three mills on a dollar.“The supervisors require the cumin uni lies receiving library service to provide, for the lirst year, a reading room, if one is desired, with the necessary amount or shelving needed, the tables, chairs, heat and light. Also the salary of a custodian to be in charge during the hours of circulation.In one branch, whore a reading room is not possible, books are cared for and circulated from a private home, another collection from a jewelry store, and one is housed in the postottice of a little town where the people were anxious for the use of books, and are proving if.Your Improvement Society could make application for a branch library.stating your decision in regard to maintaining a reading room in connection with books tiiat will be sent you for circulation, and also for reference if you so desire. The periodicals will be considered later.“When you hold vrmr meeting to talk over ways and means, please ask the people Interested to make out lists of books desired, new and old, and band them to the chairman, who can forward them to us. and we will make « iriupujeui to you at u.s e:my a ume as possible. Some of the hooks we may find in stock, others will be purchased and made ready for circulation from your particular branch.The county pays all transportation charges and postage, furnishes all working material and supplies.”It is understood that the lax is levied upon all property in the county outside the cities, whether a community is taking the service or not.Therefore, Van Nuys is paying this three-mill tax right now.Many towns in the county are getting this service, imd from comments appearing in the papers, they are well pleased with it. In some of these towns, existing public organizations handle this work of providing for quarters and a librarian. In others, a nubile library association lias been formed.
