S—In addition or postscript I will add a little correspondence to my letter from a member of the 124th New York Regiment that faced me at Gettysburg just 50 years ago July 2,1913. Here is what, he says:Lieut. S. M. Cottle, Ty Ty, Ga.Dear Sir:—You will see by this leaflet that I am trying to get the brave boys who fought at the Devil’s Den on each side to meet there at 4 p. m. July 2. May I ask your help • to secure the attendance of your Georgia boys. Many letters have been sent me commending the plan.Let up show the world that we are as ardent in peace as we were strenuous in war.With the wish that I may see you and many of your Georgia friends,I am, sincerely yours,H. Howell.Now comes his leaflet.Gettysburg Anniversary; the 50th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg will be commemorated the first week in July and many of the brave men from the North and South are expected to assemble on the battlefield at that time and personally I think an effort should be made to have the representatives of the regiments of each army meet and shake hands on the very spot where they fought fifty years ago.As a member of the 124th New York regiment which belonged to Ward’s brigade of the 1st division, 3rd Army Corps which formed the left of the line of the Northern army and was stationed on the sid* of Devil’s Den where the first attack of Hood’s division of LongstreetV corps was made at 4 p. m., July 2nd I went to meet some of the men who came among the guns of Smith, 4th New York Battery and who charged* • t I -I. _ . t r
