WW VIIW 4 Ulinvvucould not use the guns on us with such deadly effect. We left many good boys on the plains of Gettysburg for their bones to bleach until the long roll is called. Just 50 years ago on the coming of July 2nd, 1863, 1 will give you the official report of the death of 124th New York Regi* ment that helped to support the 4th New York Battery, was larger than our Brigade and was well protected. Lost and killed 93. We were on the open field with no protection. 2nd Georgia Regiment killed 91. 15th Georgia Regiment 171, 17th Georgia Regiment 90. 20th Georgia Regiment 121. Never a more gallant charge on the records of history. You see what the death roll was in a very few minutes. The rest of the Yankee line that opposed in the charge we never could get any record of those killed.Yes, I am proud of my command, Benning’s Brigade.1 am sorry that 1 am so situated that I cannot be one of the Vets, to meet at the Gettysburg Reunion July 1st, 2nd. 3rd and 4th, 1913. It would take more inducement than the Yankees are offering for me to take that trip. Hard tack with camping outfit ^stnring me in the face, in a field tent with a little cot to lay our bones on, be subject to our tattoo call or miss your meals, I cannot swallow that large an animal. 1 prefer staying at home, keeping the wolf from the door. 1 trust whoever goes will have a very pleasant trip. I would be .glad to hear from some of the old veterans, especially after they get back from Gettysburg. May we all meet at a reunion in Heaven at the Long Roll call, is my praver.
