Dear Gazette:I know your columns are open to all old vets, hence this letter.As the time neared for the 50th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, Pa., 50 years ago. under a promise to a few of my old Vet.friends I will write some reminiscences about that great battie.Yes, it is with pleasure that 1 can remember when a boy that I was one of the boys that participated in that battle and I was one of ihe boys that charged the 4th New York battery, stationed at Devil’s Den at the foot of Gettysburg mountain, an impregnable position. My command, some of Gen. Longstreet's corps, Hood's old division, Henry L. Benning, Georgia Brigade, composed of 2nd Georgia Regiment, 15th Georgia Regiment, my old regiment. 17th Georgia Regiment; 20th Georgia Regiment, with 1st Texas Regiment of Robinson’s Brigade did the charging and capturing of the 4th New York battery, but acknowledge we could not hold it long on account of our exposed position. The Yankees had an infilading fire from their mountain position with both Infantry and Artillery. You will see later by the death rate that it would have been folly to hold the battery longer at such a great disadvantage. The death roll was coming too fast. We had to fall back out of reach of their position. We took every precaution, we spiked the guns before leaving them, made them harmless so the Yankees
