A very said and unfortunate affair has occurred in our midst, due to our indifference and neglect of the needy and afflicted. Most of us are too much engrossed in our own affairs of making a living or seeking ways of pleasure to pay much attention to the few unfortunates who may come in our way. A few weeks ago a poor abused woman from Ilavillah came to our town with her four small children seeking refuge and relief from a drunken, abusive husband. She was allowed the use of a small, one-room building in town, where she and the children have remained for several weeks. The woman is dying it is claimed, from tuberculosis of the stomach, and her young baby is also in a very serious condition. A few days ago the case was brought to the attention of a few people in town who began to investigate and found it a case for the county. Dr. Fryer being absent, Dr. Efner, of Oroville, was called to attend, who made the woman and baby, with the help of a few humanely inclined people, as comfortable as possible. The family was removed Monday to the Mission. Cases such as this should cause us to pause and reflect that in a land of plenty like ours, there should be no need of such things. There are no words strong enough to censure the utter indifference of a community to such a case of destitution.
