STEPHENS1 After the inspection had been completed and Mr. Stephens had explainedthe scope and plans in the making, the guests were given the option of numerous pastimes for the rest of the afternoon. Many took to the soothing surf at Venice Beach; others elected to try their hand at fishing, while a number of the ladies enjoyed bridge on the cool verandas of the Venice Casino.Dinner was served to the party at 6:30 o’clock at the Hotel Venice dining salon. Here the usual weekly entertainment program of the Legion Luncheon Club held over from the midday gathering at Bradenton was presented under the direction of Frank Webb. Dancing followed at the hotel with Antonio Lopez’s Venetian Serenaders furnishing the music.Expressions of wonderment at the gigantic scope of the Venice development were frenuent.lv uttered hv the visitors.Antonio Lopez and his Venetian Cerenaders are now at the new $500,000 Hotel Venice recently opened under the management of Charles P. Kane. Mr. Kane has brought this notable group of musicians here after making an extensive search all over the state in an efofrt to secure an orchestra of a calibre in keeping with the other splendid appointments of the city’s new hostelry.Millions of persons are familiar with this capable group of musicians as they have frequently broadcasted popular programs over radio station, WDAE, Tampa. Director Lopez is well known as the leader of “La Floridians,” the Tampa Beach orchestra, and as director of orchestras at the Italian and Franklin theatres at Tampa. He was also at the head of the well known Tampa Terrace orchestra.Lopez received his musical education at the Convent of Holy Names Musical Academy, Tampa. He has specialized in piano, although he knows all orchestral instruments to perfection. He is greatly interested in stimulating increased interest in music in this section of the finer types both dance and concert. Lopez carries no drums in his orchestra, preferring to obtain rhythm from banjo, piano and stringed basses. He believes this make-up of an orchestra eliminates the bang and clatter of the usual orchestra.Already the coming of Lopez and his Venetian Serenaders is playing a prominent part in the establishment of the Hotel Venice as the rendezvous of fashion along the West Coast. Dances are held at the hotel every Wednesday and Saturday evening, at which the Lopez musicians play. The orchestra also provides entertainment programs daily at luncheon and dinner in the beautiful new dining salon of the hotel. On Sunday afternoon from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, special concerts are given. The popularity the Hotel Venice has gained in the very short period that it has been opened to the public is as gratifying as it has been surprising to the hotel officials, owing to the brief time there has been for the merits of this excellent hostelry to spread. The hotel has now been practically completed, only the last little finishing touches inside being attended to almost unnoticed by the rapidly increasing guest list. Beautifying of the grounds surrounding the hotel has proceeded rapidly, until now little remains to be done except the parking of the patio. Work of placing awnings over all the windows is expected to be completed within a few days.
