John Waggoner and Rose Schofield of Sweet Water, Brown County. Treat ed to a Good Whipping and a Coat of Tar and Feathers. Eli David, brother of Ex-Sheriff Samp David, of Nashville, was killed by a pistol shot fired through his head, on Friday night, July 5th, at the residence of John Waggoner, Sweet Water, Hamblin township. David was lying in a hammock at the time, and Rose Schofield was with him. She said that David shot him self, but the story was not generally believed. The coroner however re turned a verdict of suicide—finding David had killed himself. Davie lived from the time he was shot, about eight o'clock, until next morn ing about eight o'clock, but never regained consciousness to tell his story. Yesterday morning soon after midnight a band of masked men ap proached the Waggoner house and took him and the Schofield woman from bed and administered to them a severe whipping and then a coat of tar and feathers, then warned them to leave the country. Yes terday afternoon Waggoner and the Schofield woman went to Nashville, consulting an attorney, and claimed to have recognized at least three of the white coppers, and said they lived in Nashville. It is thought though, they will heed the warning and leave the country. When seen at Nashville yesterday afternoon they presented a pitiable appearance, and traces of the tar and feathers, and the merciless switch were easily discerned.
