Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly in Air Force One? Most people will never have the chance, but the oportunity does exist if you are a major campaign con tributor. Any time the President travels, at least one pool reporter is right with him. An experienced regular from the White House press corps gets a seat on the President's aircraft and it is his duty to report to all the other repor ters what takes place that is of news value Now, on a short, uneventful flight, a pool reporter can get more than a little bored, so on a 41-minute hop from Andrews Air Force Base in Washington to Kennedy Airport in New York, he is hard-pressed to come up with ‘‘meaningful’’ news items. So, if he is a good writer, he gets some news out of the everyday things that do happen, to wit: ‘‘Wheels up at 6:57 p.m. “Jody Powell, his black tie askew, came back to report who all was aboard the plane: these special guests included Sen. Hubert Humphrey; Jack and Judy Carter, the President's eldest son and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. Smith Bagley, at whose St. Simons Island the President has spent many a carefree moment; Nathan Landow of Bethesda, a member of the Democratic National Committee’s Executive Finance Committee and head of Landow and Co., a building and property management firm and Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Gregory of Pensacola, Fla., another Democratic fat cat who is chairman of Faith In vestment Co. ‘Your pooler also spotted Charlie Shultze and Tim Kraft of the staff aboard our silver-and-blue 707. *‘Jody noted that practically all the massive costs of bringing this en tourage to New York was borne by the Democratic National Committee. This includes also Mondale’s plane (Air Force IT) and the advance work. “The only exceptions were the agents, the military, the doctor and, of course, the press pool. “His tie by now neatly tied, Powell came back later to ask whether the motion picture ‘Rocky’, was a United Artists’ production. No doubt the President’s press secretary had in mind some tasteful allusion which he or his employer planned to spring on Arthur (Bananas) Krim, head of United Artists who was a moving force behind the Democratic dinner in New York. “Wheels down at 7:38 p.m. Two helicopters were at the ready and the President took off from his deserted perch at Kennedy Airport for the Wall Street pad at 7:47. We followed into a blazing setting sun. ‘He landed at 7:57 and immediately hop into a two-tone tan Buick with New York plates. (His guests came later in a bus marked ‘Special.’ “Cops lined the route every 100 yards or so all the way to the Waldorf. Knots of people waved during the 12- minute trip to the Waldorf garage. Traffic was cut off in one direction only. The President ignored the gays and the anti-abortionists and con centrated on the Democrats within.”’ And you thought being a White House reporter was a glamorous job. What else is happening? So many persons are seeking office in the area, and many of them political newcomers, there have been problems with some petitions, mostly careless mistakes, like filing in the wrong office or having persons living out of the election area sign. We have a note from Mrs. Beverly Burlette (Carpenter), a former Hudson Falls resident, noting that her husband, Carl T. Burlette, who has recently undergone surgery in Florida, would like to hear from former friends in this area. Drop him a note at 18 N.W. 40th Street, Oakland Park, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33309. A note from the Stowe, Vt., Reporter: ‘‘More grandmothers needed for softball each Thursday at 5:30 p.m.! Don’t let the youngsters show us up! Put a casserole in the oven for the family and have an en joyable evening out! Beg or steal your youngster’s mitt!
