Among Stonewall's early pioneers were Mr. and Mrs. John Mongomery, who came from the Province of Que bec in the year 1879. Both were of Irish parentage but born in Quebec itself, and both, looking to the future, had decided to come to Manitoba, which meant in those days, a long and arduous journey, Mr. Montgom ery came to Stonewall in April of '79 and Mrs. Montgomery followed the succeeding November, bringing her most precious possessions to the new home—four boys ranging in age from 13 to 6, a daughter of 4 and a mon strous feather bed which it was hoped would nullify the rigors of even a Manitoba winter). The journey, by way of Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis ,and Crookston required a stout and courageous heart. On reaching their destination, the little family were de trained at St. Boniface and were obliged to cross the Red River on planks over thin ice to Winnipeg, where Mr. Montgomery met them and drove them the twenty miles to Stonewall which has been the family home ever since. Mr. Montgomery opened the first Blacksmith Shop and Implement Agency in Stonewall, and this he later disposed of to enter the hard ware business in 1884, which he car ried on until his sudden death in 1889. The bringing up of a family of six children in a new country then developed upon Mrs. Montgomery, who until her death in 1923, ever in a silent forceful way, prayed hers was the pioneer spirit which was responsible for the adventure in the new land, and hers the indomitable will which in that west built up and kept together the home thus made. The passing years have witnessed the deaths of two members of the young family who made the journey west with their Mother in those early days—a son and the oldest daughter May, who became Mrs. W. T. Syte and who died in 1912 in early woman hood. The still surviving members of the once large family are: Dr. B. W. Montgomery, Minister of Health and Public Welfare for the Province of Manitoba, Mr. Weston Montgom ery, who after his father’s death ear ned on the hardware business, Mr. A.
