ONE YEAR AGO July 17, 2003 — Placer County Fire and the California Department of Forestry Hazardous Material Team members were busy for over 12 hours Friday when a truck stopping for fuel at the Tesoro gas station in Gold Run began to leak an unknown substance. The area was closed and HAZ MAT members spent several hours cleaning up the spill. 10 YEARS AGO July 13, 1994 — Frustrated by yet another deadline for work on the Colfax Hotel com ing and going, city officials are losing patience with the owners of the 90-year-old building. The city planning commission, however, is hope ful a new architect will lead to long-awaited improvements. Colfax Barracudas’ swim team put forth a balanced team showing last Saturday to splash past the Auburn Lake Trails Dolphins in a Foothill Swim League meet. The Colfax Tankers pleased a vocal home pool crowd by posting a 1197-854 victory. 20 YEARS AGO July 18, 1984 — Despite original reports from Denver police that murder suspect Duane R. Roy had been turned in by workers at a Denver hos pital, Colfax police discovered Roy had turned himself in. Roy, 45, is the main suspect in a hammer slaying of his moth er, who was found in her apart ment July 1. For the fourth consecutive year, Sierra College in Rocklin will serve as the San Francisco 49ers training camp site. With 108 bodies entering camp, 49er team trainers predict they will be using over 65 miles of tape while wrapping more than 6,200 ankles over the five weeks of camp. 50 YEARS AGO July 16, 1954 — The coals in the huge barbeque pit at Dutch Flat are fiery red, and it is nearly time to place the meat over them, bury it and wait until the precise moment when the meat is done to remove it. If everything goes as planned, as it has since 1936, the time will be 6:30 on the evening of July 17. Eddie Fontana will take the mound this Sunday when the Colfax Fireballs entertain the Auburn Cubs on the local mountain, in a Placer-Nevada League start. The Meadow Vista area has developed quite rapidly, so much so that we are now rec ognized as being “on the map.” You will now find the spot on the map of the June issue of the National Geographic mag azine. 75 YEARS AGO July 19, 1929 — The his toric old Duncan Hotel at Yankee Jims was destroyed by fire early last Saturday morn ing. It was built in 1870 when Yankee Jims was a thriving mining town and was the oldest landmark in the community. Extensive improvements and development work are now going on at the California Premier Mines Corporation's Rising Sun and Big Oak Tree mines.
