Support for scholarship fund As a member of Covington Citizen's Scholarship Foundation Board, I attended a fund-raising drive kickoff dinner. In the next two years, the goal is to raise $100,000 in capital funds, the in terest from which will go towards scholarships for a few graduates. The Covington chapter is the oldest “Dollars for Scholars’’ chapter in the state, established April 8, 1964. The speaker for the dinner was Charles A. Ricketts, of Hartford City, a volunteer with the regional office of **Dollars for Scholars’* ‘T was disappointed to learn from Ricketts that the Delphi chapter of ‘‘Dollars for Scholars”’ had disbanded. As a 1969 graduate of DCHS, I can remember the beginnings of the organization, and the banners an nouncing their fund-raising ef forts. It seems the original idea of the fund was to raise one dollar from everyone in the community towards scholarships. After a few years, it was hoped that recipients would repay the monies, so the organization could be self supporting. Obviously this did not happen or the Delphi organization would still be going. I did not receive a scholarship from the organization, but I could not have gone to college had it not been for a number of other scholarships. With the ris ing costs of college, scholarships are needed more than ever. I have read with interest the ar ticles in the Comet in the past several month concerning the fate of the Monroe Street building. I can understand the school board’s decision to raze the building (although sentimentally I hate to see my alma mater torn down). But what I hate even more is $140,000 that will go into the destruction of the building, money that would certainly go far in providing DCHS graduates with scholarships in the years to come. I am not urging the school board-to-change-its-mind._I don't believe that the opposition, Delphi Landmarks, could begin to fund renovation of the building, although I admire the efforts. What I am saying is that as much effort should be made toward re-organizing the Delphi “Dollars for Scholars’’ organiza tion. After all the future of the community lies with its young people, not in outdated buildings. You are the sickest kind of sick! How could anyone steal from the grave? Obviously you have never been through the grief of losing a fami ly member whom you loved more than life itself or maybe you have never loved or been loved. In the past 17 months YOU have stolen two large beautiful planters and numerous smaller plants from our daughter Allison’s grave. I have spoken to several others who have loved ones at the beautiful country setting called Maple Lawn and they tell me stealing is common. Its so ironic that we chose Flora and Mayle Lawn instead of Lafayette because we wanted our daughter in my home town’s lov ing atmosphere. Our daughter was taken suddenly without warn ing at age 15. I know she would say ‘‘Mom, its OK, they must need the flowers more than I do,”’ but I don’t have her kind and forgiving nature!
