Two local horses came in winners during two days of racing at the Keokuk County Fairgrounds in What Cheer July 9 and 10.Saturday, Don Cronk of Humboldt drove We Three - to a win in the three-year-old trot in 2:13, ahead of Princess Mink. We Three is owned by Kermit Shimon of Rolfe.Sunday, Golden Chief, owned and driven by Ed Krapp of Humboldt, won the free-for-all trot in a time of 2:13, beating Stringtown Lane which finished second.Other top finishers by local horses included a second by Careless Key, owned by Larry and Gien Jensen of Bode and driven by Larry Jensen, in the $1,000 pace, Division II, behind Satan's Dancer; a third in the $1,000 pace, Division I, by H H Rick, owned by Paul Kainpen of Humboldt with Butch Dasen doing the driving; and a third by Harry Dasen'e Miss H B Cash in the three-year-old pace, with Dasen driving.Other area horses competing during the two days included Miss Song Worthy, owned by Don Cronk and Orville Anderson; Countess A, owned by Cronk and Anderson; Sand Pedro, owned by Dasen; Major Chico, owned by Kampen, which nabbed a fourth in the free-for-all pace Sunday with Jensen at the reins; Kampen’s K K Daytime; and another Dasen horse, Princess Tara.
