WheelockA sense of -generous sorrow and of profound regrot on the part of the people of Munro township and the surrounding territory when * on July 1st. the news was brought to them that in the evening of the proceeding day, the call had suddenly como to this old and most highly respected resident of their community, in the city of Detroit when for several weeks sho had been enjoying a vijsit with her many relatives., former residents of Munro township, but now residing in the great metropolis.Mrs. Wheolock was born in Ghera-rgo territory New York July 14, 1831 and had she survived another two weeks would have attained the re-markable age of Ninety-five years.Sho was married to Daniel S. 'Wheelock at Syracuse, N. Y. in June 1850. Soon after the Battle ot Bull Run -in July 1861 Mr. Wheelock heard Lincoln's call for volunteer^ to * defend the country's flag and its honor and volunteered for immediate service.ole rustHe was assigned to service in the defense of the national capitol. Being a leader of Run he was assigned, to organizing and drilling the new recruits’ that flocked to Washington a duty which ho performed so effici-ently that he was, upon being wounded at the battle of Vicksburg, given an honorable discharge with a Lieutenant/Captain's commission.Little provision, in those days,Was made for the wives and children of the country’s soldiers.All honor is .duo and is freely accorded tlie men who fought for Old Glory and the things for which it stood, hut what shall bo said about such noble souls as Mrs. Wheelock, us and'^o* for several years battled with ihigan t° maintain themselves and theirbe in- j children while their husbands and 0fo_ fathers were fighting to save the nation.At the close of the war Mrs.Wheelock, with her husband came to Cheboygan, soon settling on a home-stead in the Tallman Settlement itl ^Prom Inverness township.
