ANNIVERSARY OF ' BATTLE_• •*»Judge L B. Nash goes to Rosalia tomorrow to deliver the anniversary Address at the big picnic which Is to be frild near the dividing line between . Spokane and Whitman counties in memory of the battle of Steptoe, fought between Colonel Steptoe, in command of the United States troops, and the Indians in 1857. The celebration is expected to be attended by the farmers and residents for many miles around. It will be held on the battle ground.Colonel Steptoe left Walla Walla May 6 n command of 130 dragoons. On the 16th when approaching the Spokane country they were surprised and surrounded by a force of Indians estimated at from 600 to 1000. The Indians were Palouses, Coeur d’Alenes, Yakimas and Spokanes.A desperate battle took place on the 18th on the butte which was afterwards named Steptoe for the commanding colonel. Captain Oliver H. P. Taylor and Lieutenant William Oaston were among the killed. In the night Colonel Steptoe and his men escaped and made their way to Walla Walla.In the following August the United States troops defeated the Indians near Medical Lake.Steptoe butte Is in the center of the rich Palouse country, 14 miles north of Colfax. On its summit has been placed an observatory and telescope, through which the entire country for many miles around can be seen.
