OIL IN THE NORTHWEST, Indications of an Extensive Field in Washington territory. _ From the Tacoma, W. T., News is taken the item which will be found below, relative to the new oil field in the northwest, a short distance from Tacoma. Messrs. Neeland Bros., of Bolivar, Alle gany county, W. Y., are largely interested in the enterprise of devel oping the territory, and having made a thorough analysis of the surface prospect, they find it to be 80 per cent. pure amber petroleum. The president of the company, L. F. Thompson, was formerly of this region and has numerous relatives living here now. The News says as follows : . Between Summer and Orting, on the north side of the Puyallup river, on the lands of the Tacoma oil company, petroleum rises to the surface of the ground, and in num erous places can be seen floating on the surface of the water, which flows from springs. Its existence was known several years ago, but those who saw it did not know what it was and took no trouble to investigate it. At several points the oil is easily collected from the surface of the water with a spoon or woolen cloth. When separated from the water it is a greenish brown color, semi-fluid in consistence, and has a peculiar odor, like the ‘Sen eca oil” which was found in all drug stores forty years ago. About three years ago an effort was made in the direction of prospecting this field for oil, but the scheme fell through. Last year another attempt of the game kind failed to materialize. Now a company has been organ ised for the same purpose, who give out they mean business. ‘The capi tal stock is $1,000,000, divided into 40,000 shares of $25 each. Its offi cers are: President, L. F. Thomp son; Vice President, W. 5. Kelly; Secretary, W. H. Fife; Treasurer, J. W. Sprague. The company pro pose to put down one or more wells, and say that the work of boring will be commenced in a few weeks. The whole Puget Sound country will await the results with much inter est. Experts from Pennsylvania oil fields who have examined the country near Elia, declare that the prospects for obtaining a flow of oil from a well in that section is as good as they ever saw, after an extended experience.
