Ivar Hru.—The Sonora Democrat, editor by a Sand Spaniard,”’ who is from the South (Amboy) says: ‘“*The Democratic party represents the people, and maintains their rights—the rights of all—though they stand exposed to the fires of persecution. They are the sworn foes of oppression, and the legal, loyal, social and religious persecutions of four years have hardened them as steel in the fire.’’ It “represents the people of Andersonville, Fort Pillow, Charleston, Allison’s Ranch and such places. It maintains the rights of all foc: plunderers and assassins as Wilkes Booth, Jeff. Davis and Semmes of the Ala bama. The only ‘fires its members stand exposed to,’ are those of which ** Auld Clootie’ is chief engineer. They are the sworn foes of Union, liberty and progress, and their own accursed meanness has ** hard ened them” in every imaginable crime from treason to chicken stealing, like ‘‘steel in the fire.”’ Look out for THE SwinpLeR.—Our newspa per friends throughout this State and Nevada, will confer a favor by giving publicity to the following: An individual, who sometimes signs his name ** Henry Secord,”’ sometimes * Secure,’’ and is often called ‘“* Hank,” and Shadow,” left Watsonville about five weeks since indebted, apparently, to every one in the town, and carrying off considera ble funds which he had collected for business men, including a portion of the public school money collected by him, and a few hundred dollars collected on account of the Pajaro Valley Times. Secord is originally from the State of New York; was a resident of San Jose for some years ; but removed to Wat sonville about two years since, where, for the lost year, he has acted in the capacity of constable. He is a wagoner by tride, which business he generaly follows. He takes great pride in amusing his friends by pencil caricatures and pen-knife sculpturing He has a disgusting braggadocia air—one of his choice expressions being a desire or threat to paned somebody in the snout with a six shooter.’ Tie is about six feet tall; very spare built : walks erect ; dark hair, straight and thin; no whiskers, but sometimes a meagre moustache. Any information in re gard to the above described individual will , thankfully received at this ofice.— Pajaro vs. Wyatt R.A. Pryor Says.—A_ correspon dent of the Cincinnati Gazette describes an interview with Roger A. Pryor at General Logan’s headquarters in North Carolina.. In the course of conversation Pryor said : We have been fairly whipper, and I think that such men in Lee's and Johnston's armies as do not lay down their arms and return at once to their duties as law abiding citizens should be treated as outlaws. For myself, if you will ony leave me two old mules to work a few acres of land with, in part pay for those that Sheridan’s men took from me, I will go back to the plow and my duty as a loyal citizen. Let him have the mules, but not in part pay for what Sheridan took from him, for that would be a bad precedent. We don’t pay such fellows for what has been captured from them. Trying tuk Starvation Dopce.—It is re ported by the New York Daily News, (unre liable authority) that after Jeff Davis was manacled in his cell at Fort Monroe, he steadfastly refused to eat for thirty-six hours, at the expiration of which time, by the ad vice of Dr. Cravens, his irons were removed. They ought to have let the old murderer play out his dodge. He would have come to his regular rations before actual starvation over took him. This same Cravens (a mighty mean name) seems to have conceived a mis praced sense of mercy and has tried to get better terms of confinement for Jeff by stat ing that unless Davis was allowed more fresh air than he could get by constant confine ment, in his cell, he would not live ten days. If we did not want him preserved for the gal lows we should say ‘*let him starve.” Help ower Sexatous. —As the Senatorial contest is becoming exciting, the following list of hold-over Senators who will have votes on the subject, will be interesting : J. K. Benton Sacramento; Lewis Cunning ham, Yuba; H.L. Dodge, San Francisco; Geo. S. Evans, Tuolumne and Mono; J. E. Male, Placer; C. Hartson, Napa, etc., Ho race Hawes, San Francisco ; John P. Jones, Trinity and Shasta ; Joseph Katz, Nevada; W. Hi. Leonard, Calaveras; W. E. Lovett, Monterey; F. L. Maddox, El Dorado; S. Meyers, San Joaquin, W. L. Montgomery Mariposa, etc.; C. B. Porter, Contra Costa, etc.; J. P. Reddington, San Francisco; J. A. Rush, Colusa; F. M. Smith, Butte; M. C. Tuttle, San Bernardino, S. P. Wright, Del Norte. We think Montgomery and Rush are the only copperheads. Not an Orcan.—The Examiner says that the Call should know better than to assert that it is the “organ’ of the Democratic Party. The Examiner is perhaps right. We should know better than to make such an assertion. An ‘organ,’’ if played on, invariably discourses music; but the Ex aminer, though played on never so lively, discourses not a musical note. It ecroaks and screeches like an ingreased cartwheel in Summer time, and makes no more music than does a parrot under excitement ; there fore, the Examiner is not an ‘‘organ’’—it is, rather, a disgustan.— Call, The Jester’s Toisure.—One of the most truthful and touching tributes to the memory of Abraham Lincoln, which has emanated from the press, is that from the London Punch. While the President lived, that journal was unsparing in caricature and ridicule of the man and his acts. Now, in craving a place among the mourners, it frankly confesses : Yes he has lived to shame me from my sneer, To tame my pencil, and to confute my pen To make me own this kind of Princes’ peer.— This rail-splitter, a true-born king of men. With pleasure we record the fact, that the machinery for the Cotton Mill about to be erected in this State by Mr. Rector, has been landed at Capt. Michelson’s wharf, and we understand that Clinton is to be the favored locality for its erection. We are pleased to See progress in the mechanical arts through out the State, and more particularly pleased when this county, the home of our adoption, is selected as the pl. i — Oakland And ace of their development. Reverse re, PLEASE.—The Copperhead Examiner has the audacity to interrogate Union candidates for the United States Sen ate thus: “Are you in favor of giving the negro the same social and Political standing as the white man?’ We will repeat the question in a more important form: « Are you in favor of giving secessionists and as sassinationists the same social and political standing with the black man?” [fF 80, that lets you out.— Flag.
