by WAYNE BOYCE Sun District News EditorSOURIS — Jake May hew has been farming for over 30 years. He’s relied upon his own industry and common sense to make a living from hissection of land southeast of Wawanesa. He’s never called AgricultureRepresentative OwenBeaver, of Souris, before. But times are changing and the government has a program for rebating 15 per cent on the costs of making improvements to farm water systems. Mr. Mayhew has spent over $300 improving his water system. He left a message at the municipal office in Wawanesa for Mr.-Beaver to call around on his next weekly visit. While the Ag-Rep. was on the farm there were a couple of other things Mr. Mayhew thought he should see. First there was the gully with alkalai in it. “No problem,” said the 27-year-old Mr. Beaver, hire the municipal grader, flatten out the gulley and seed it to grass. Mr. Mayhew wanted to know if the government pays for suchimprovements. It once did. Mr. Beaver said he would check. The second problem: a dug-out filled with plant growth. Two solutions, said Mr. Beaver, drag bluestone through it or spray with achemical.Back at the farmyard Mr. Beaver gives Mr. Mayhew some booklets on herbicides, then he’s on to the next farm. The second farm belongsinbigdemandA busy manFarmer Jake Mayhew of the Wawanesa area gets advice from Souris ag rep Owen Beaver on how to make use ofrep answers some 2.000 such calls from farmers each year as he attempts to improve the agricultural life of his area.an gully with alkali soil.
