AUGUSTA AP) —Gov. Reed said Friday he has instructed the State attorney general's office to investigate alleged acial dis crimination by hotel owners in Kennebunkport. Reed's action followed a charge earlier this week by Kennebunk port Playhouse owner ‘Robert C. Currier that seven hotels refused to lodge Negro actress Claudia McNeil, who appeared at the theater in “A Raisin in the Sun” ‘last week, , Hugh C. Saunders, chairman for the state's Advisory Com mittee on Civil Rights, said his committee will also investigate the matter and report to the Na tional Civil Rights Commission in Washington. Also today, the Brunswick and Central Maine chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People wired a joint request for an in estigation to the attorney general. Reed's action was apparent taken before, and without knowl ege of, the NAACP request. The governor noted, however , as Attorney General Frank E. Hancock had earlier — that there have been no complaints by any alleged victims of discrimination. Hancock has said that without such complaints, charges such as Currier’s are useless
