Louis Durant who lived up until 1852 on the bluffs across he Big Black river, about lt;ne mile east. The Sultan property is located there today.During the early 1850’s Only a small portion of the kind on which the early settlers lived was in cultivation. Among this earliest gnup were the Sproles family, the Brookes, and Landfairs, the Grays, Gulledges, Rods «md James Rogers.Capt. Cason purchased in 1852 practically all of the kind which later came to be the town, except a portion to the north. He cultivated much of this up to 1865.Durant was not incorporated by the legislature a? a town until 1865. At that time it had approximately 150 residents. The first election of town officials took place on November 25, 1865 when Avil-Interesting bits of histroy: West, Mississippi was named for Grandma—MinervaTubb West Lockhart sometime later.Miss Alice Hamilton of Durant is the daughter of Emily Victoria Lockhart Hamilton. Now retired, she has lived a life of service in the teaching profession.Mrs. Mary Cora Castleberry tW. C.) and Mrs. Olivia Jones (W. H.) are daughters of Celia Ann Lockhart Reed who arrived on the scene on March 14. 1847, after the family came to Mississippi.Cornelia P. West, who wrote the Original and only known history of Durant for The Durant News many years ago, was a school teacher here.This history, with some additions. is carried elsewhere on page one and we believe will be of interest to those who know and love Durant.She was Cornelia Pippen, or Pipkin, and married a West.
