it,1-*ca1ai€III1t\CThe Fight at Lewiston. iFrom the Mineral Argus the En- ( TEitPRisE summarizes a correct re- t port «f the bloody Fourth of July j celebration at Lewiston, Judith Basin, Meagher county. Two men, one of whom was in every appearance a desperate plainsman and the other but little better, had driven a small band of horses (probably stolen) into that vicinity and were trading or selling them. The desperado-looking fellow called himself “Rattlesnake Jake” Owen; the other gave his name as Charles Fallon. Fourth of July morning they came into town to enjoy the fun. Two outsiders got into a dispute and Jake came around with a revolver in his hand and knocked one of the disputants down by hitting him across the face with a gun. Jake had his taste of blood and was heard to remark to Fallon that he guessed they would run the town. The two entered a saloon and quickly took a number of drinks. Jake then stepped i» up to an unoffending half-breed named Doane, and fired at but missed him. Doane drew his revolver, bred and struck Jake in the lingers. By that time all the villagers who owned guns had them in hand and many were using them. Fallon was on his horse shooting with a Winchester. A shot from the crowd took him in the abdomen, and lie fell forward on the horn of his saddle, but wheeling his horse he retired 400 yards, behind a building, and joined his partner Jake. Then kneeling on the ground he took t deliberate aim and lired at Ben Smith, who was running to get out of the way of the dying bullets. Smith fell dead. The citizens then closed around i the desperadoes and m a few minutes c both were dead. Owens’ body was wounded by nine bullets, while Fal- 1 Ion’s carried five of the leaden messengers of death. Smith was the f only one ot the citizens who was injured. The two'mistaken and misguided desperadoes were given decent burial at the hands of the men whom they had intended to terrorize. Owens a is said to have been a prospector known to many in the Black Hills and ^ Montana. tr(1t1;(I]r(]01 rfIi:e
