AUSTIN — Got green teeth? Trying to re-grow a tooth? In an effort to help put dental dilem mas to rest, twelve Texas den tists along with other members of the Academy of General Den tistry (AGD) will participate as hosts in a national SmileLine on Thursday, July 20. Texas AGC members hosting this year’s SmileLine are Dr. Michael Adams, Edinburg; Dr. Ann Behrends-Jones, College Station; Sr. James Chancellor, Dr. Robbie Henwood and Dr. Ron Morin, all from San Antonio; Dr. T. Bob Davis, Dallas; Dr. Cindy Flanagan and Dr. Daniel R. Mc Clain, Houston; Dr. Tom Karr, Amarillo; Dr. William Powell, Gainesville; Dr. Patrick Mitchell, El Paso; and Dr. David Tillman, Fort Worth. SmileLine is a free dental health hotline that consumers can call to talk one-on-one with a dentist. From 8 a.m.-8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, July 20, any one with questions or concerns about oral health can call the SmileLine, toll-free, at 800- SMILE33. Now in its ninth year, Smile Line advice has helped put more than 9,000 consumers’ dental questions and fears to rest and has strengthened and encour aged the patient’s relationship with the dentist. “Most people know that ne glecting their oral health means risking cavities and gum dis ease,” says SmileLine coordina tor David Tecosky, DMD, FAGD. “We hope that this toll-free serv ice will help answer difficult or embarrassing questions about dental and general health is sues.” In recent years, researchers have found a connection be tween gum disease and coro nary vascular disease, which can place people at risk for heart at tacks and strokes. In individu als with diabetes, gum disease is associated with poor control of insulin levels. Pregnant women also need to be careful: gum disease can place pregnant women at risk for having low birth weight babies. “By seeking dental care on a more preventive and pro-active basis, patients will aid their overall health,” says Dr. Tecosky. Sponsored by Proctor and Gamble, the SmileLine, den tistry’s first national hotline, continues to raise consumer awareness about oral health, new dental technology and the options available to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. The Texas AGD is a 2400- member constituent of the Acad emy of General Dentistry, an in ternational dental organization with 36,000 members from the United States, its territories and Canada. As members, these den tists are dedicated to continuing dental education to ensure the best possible care for patients. Visit the Academy's Web site at www.agd.org
