CHIPPEWA FALLS — A Democratic assemblyman from Chippewa County Wednesday said development of a state park on Lake Wissota is being delayed by Gov. Knowles and the Republican majority in the state legislature. Assemblyman Bruce Peloquin said, “because Governor Knowles refused to provide $1.3 million in needed funds from general purpose revenues in his recommendation for the operation of the state park program, no new parks, includ ing Wissota State Park, can be opened in the 1967-1969 bien nium. “The state parks and recrea tion division of the Wisconsin Conservation Department has acqquired or optioned 970 acres of the total 990 acre total for the proposed park. Very little, if any further development will materialize during the ensuing two years unless additional funds are appropriated by the legislature,’ he said. The Lake Wissota State Park ‘Recreation area was established under the Outdoor Recreation Act Program (ORAP) by the 1961 session of the Wisconsin Legislature. Plans for the area, Peloquin said, call for a swimming beach and bathhouse, two boat flaunching areas, a 170 unit camping area large enough for 680 campers, with expansion possibilities, several large pic nic areas with toilets and shel ters, a service area, residence and nature hiking trails, horse riding trails and parking areas to accommodate 985 cars”. Peloquin concluded “‘it is very unlikely that funds for immedi ate future development of the spark area will be appropriated because of the conservative ele ment in control of the legisla ture.’
