'Do you know that many schools in the* United States are already closed for lack of teacners?Do you know that, in New Jersey, there are schools that to date have not found teachers to open next September?Do you know that United States Commissioner Claxton has issued a call to citizens to co-operate in inducing old teachers to return to their work as a patriotic duty, special opportunities for intensive training in summer schools to be provided for such teachers? Do you think they will come back at present salaries?Would you?Are you aware that for the year ending June 30, 1917, over 800 teachers in New Jersey were receiving average yearly salaries respectively of $497.72?Do you know that United States Commissioner of Education, P. P. Claxton, in connection with the Federal Bureau of Education, urges the raising of salaries of all persons engaged in teaching 40 to 50 per cent,, before next September?What do you think will happen to business, property values, etc., in your town when your public school disintegrates?How quickly can you get yourParent-Teacher Association to work to' rouse public sentiment in your community so that taxpayers will support your Board of Education in raising teachers’ salaries?Will you make it clear to every citizen that this movement is no criticism of any Board of Education, but a determined effort of parents to back up all Boards of Education in their splendid efforts to safeguard American schools for American children?”
