Harris of Delhi, iowa, was m tiie city today trying to locite soihe early settlers in order'to gain some dew to the where abouts of relatives wIjo lived here in the early days. rMr. Harris said to a Courier reporter that he passed through the towii o£ Waterloo, ll‘ it might be called a town, in Hie Hummer of 1X51. At that time one log cabin and teu hay stacks constituted . the village of: Waterloo. The tavern. Mr. Harris says, was built near a spring anil was aiso used as a residence and for the postoflice. He,could not recall the name of the man who conducted the tavern as he only stop? pod here a few days. At that time he was looking over the country with a view to locating.• During 1.85L and 185a he worked iii Bremer and Butler counties during the summer months. He built some farm buildings for a Mr, Phillips, who came hero from Delhi and located just over the Bremer county line,, during Jtis lira), year here,Mr. Harris is a-hale and hearty; old. man of probably 80 years of-age/erect and active, With wonderful vitality of (.lie frontiersman who withstood '.the hardships and privations of life In the early years of western civilization.'He came to Iowa in 1850, settling first at Delhi.He jokingly said that when lie' first arrived at Delhi he stopped on the public square and inquired for the location of the town.The tavern referred to.by Mr. Harris must have been the building erected by G. W. Hanna and occupied by Adam Shigley as a hotel and postoflice. ' This log cabin was built on -what is the present site of the,Nauman company's factory. According to Mr. Harris the tavern which would accommodate about a dozen guests by crowding it to its full capacity, was built near a spring and was surrotmded by a clump of willows. Both springs and .willows were common in this, section at/that time, and it is.more .than, likely that the place referred to was Shigley’s, The old gentleman was greatly surprised at the growth and development of the city as this is his first visifc,here for many years. There is considerable difference between the Waterloo of today and' the Waterloo of 51 year's ago.” he remarked, as he resumed his search for early settlers.
