By MERLIN G. HODGSON Beadle County Extension Agent A certificate from M. D. Mitch ell, state veterinarian, has just arrived in ourj office designat ing Beadle County a mod ified certified brucellosis free area. This means that the number of cat tle reacting to, brucellosis does not exceed 1 per cent and the herd infection does not ex ceed 5 per cent. According to Dr. A. C. Fields, federal veterinarian assigned to this area, we have been working a long time to certify this county, since October of 1960. HODGSON Cattle owners should follow the following suggestions to help keep this county as a certified area. 1. All adult animals should be back-tagged when they go to slaughter. If the animals sold are back-tagged, the owner may not have to retest his herd when the county comes due for recertifi cation on April 19, 1965. 2. All cattle owners are urged to vaccinate their heifer calves for brucellosis. Under this pro gram 80 per cent of the calves in the county must be vaccinated for the county to be recertified. 3. Cattle owners, when they add animals to their herd, should buy cattle that have been tested or are from negative herds. 4. This certification also means tthat cattle accompanied by a health certificate stating that they are from a negative herd not un der quarantine for brucellosis and originating from a modified certi fied brucellosis free county, may move without test anywhere in South Dakota. Movement out of state is dependent on the regula tions of the state to which the cattle are being moved. Each cattle owner in the coun ty will be contacted and furnish ed back tags and information on the program. If cattle owners co-operate with the program, recertification will be much simpler and fewer herds will have to be checked for re certification in 1965. WEEDS IN PASTURE One of the most obvious signs of a mismanaged pasture is an abundance of weeds. Over graz ing provides an opportunity for weeds to start, especially weeds that are not palatable to livestock.
