By MRS. C. M. HARWOOD A little farming town with a pop ulation of 600 people is nestled in the rich farming belt of Grayson County. No Texan in the Lone Star State has more pride in their town than a Tiogan has for Tioga. A place where strangers have a cordial welcome and a “Howdy, Neighbor’ for every man and wo man who walks the streets; that is Tioga. The first railroad (Texas Pa cific) reached what is now known as Tioga in 1881. At that time there were only four residences and a + i eis shop owned by Mart ins. Rains dug well on his place to find water which he thought at that time unsafe to use. But soon were that it had a healing pow er for cuts and burns. From this discovery originated the now fa mous mineral wells to which peo ple come from all over Texas to partake of its healing qualities. The water is distributed in bottles , drug stores all over the South western part of the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Renfro own and operate a hotel and bath house, with five wells on their lot. The Star Wel is operated by R. L. Huey. Their Well is opera ted by Dr. and Mrs. B. R. Strange. Tioga’s residential streets are bordered with some old and some new homes, but all comfortable and livable. The citizens support their town, their churches, and their school. The Honor Roll is crowded with Tioga children who have become successful citizens at the finest. Tioga is the birthplace and child hood home of Gene Autry, the mo vie star, number one idol of Tio gans, young and old alike. Though little, Tioga is proud of its name. The welcome sign is al ways out and Tioga extends an open switation to everyone to vis it the town and stop for a drink of mineral water and friendly hand shake when driving through on Highway 10. PILOT POINT Miss Marilyn Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Wilson will leave for Rapids, Mich....soon to spend summer. Miss Este Wil son of Denton will accompany them but will return in about two weeks. Mrs. Viola Blanton and daugh ter, Billie Jo, have moved to Dal las to live with her sister, Miss Joan Lee. Joe Fritcher has received word from the Texas State Board of Embalming that he successfully passed the board examinations held recently in Austin. He is em mores by the Smith Fritcheral Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lassiter and on, Tommy, of Dallas have re urned home after a visit with her , Mrs. F. H. Jones, here. t. and Mrs. Omer Jones have returned from a trip to Waco, Miss Edith Heacker has return ed from a trip to Longview. Mrs. G. B. Moffitt is visiting is week in Dallas with her son daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jee W. Moffitt and daughter, — she will return home July 14. Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Elkins left i for a two weeks’ vis her mother, Mrs. J. W. “ey and other relatives in om. They will also visit in no other cities. Flynn, manager of the Pilot” Pointers, announced that a 4 Dallas team will be on hand to challenge the local team on the home field here Sunday afternoon. Mrs. H. Chandler has returned to San Angelo after a visit with Mrs. Fred Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Aaron hon ored W. 8S. Townzen with a birth day dinner Wednesday. Those pre sent were: Mr. and Mrs. W. 8. Townzen and daughter of Tuscola, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Owens and sons, Bobby Ray, Fagin, and James Ray; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Aaron and children, Sue Ann and David; Mr. and Mrs. Riley Cof fey and Linda, Mrs. W. H. Aaron, Mr. and Mrs. ©. C. Aaron and children, Wanda, L. D., and Betty Fay. Miss Marilyn Wilson was hon ored by her aunt, Mrs. Earl Cas sity, with an informal supper Mon day night at the Cassity home in celebration of Miss Wilson's birthday, July 5. Guests included Misses Ann and Joy Timberlin and Mrs. J. M. Philes. STONY Mr. and Mrs. Martin Alford of Etihis visited Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Zerwer and Mrs. Lela Zerwer last Friday. Mrs. Ida Reeves of Dallas and Charles Reeves of Denton were guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Gam mill Thursday. Mrs. J. H. Brooks spent two days with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. James, in De catur recently. Mrs. E. C. Briscoe and Mrs. Jack Briscoe visited Mrs. Joe Briscoe in Alvord Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Anthony of Dallas were guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cooper Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cruffman and children of Napa, Calif., return ed home July 11, after spending 10 days with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Brooks. Mrs. Cuffman is the for mer Miss Bessie Brooks. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Brooks. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Franks and family of Fort Worth were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Franks. Mrs. Lela Zerner returned home Friday after a three weeks’ visit with her daughter, Mrs. Martin Al ford of Ennis. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brooks of Jus tin and Charles Brooks, Jr., of Gainesville were Sunday guests of . and Mrs. J. H. Brooks . and Mrs. Elvin Shiflett of Denton visited Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Shiflett Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar O'Neal of Aubrey were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Garrett. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coulter and children of Irving visited Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Coulter recently. COOPER CREEK Mr. and Mrs. Holifield, Mrs. C. H. Jenkins, Mrs. Bill Parish and daughter, Lynn, of Dallas and Miss Audrey Lawstoe of Boreton were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. A. ¥. Dunham.
