Death of an Old Soldier.George Chase, who came to New Mexico with the famous California in 1862 and has resided in Santa Fe for many years, died at St. Vincent’s hospital, on Wednesday afternoon. The funeral occurred the following afternoon under the auspices of Car-leton Post, No. 8., G. A. R., and the dead soldier now sleeps the profound and dreamless sleep of the grave in the National cemetery. The de-j ceased was born in Brosier, New York, in 1832; was a sea faring man (or many years; landed in San Francisco in 1861, where he abandoned' 1the life of a sailor. There, in September, 1861, he enlisted in company “A,” First California infantry, Col. James H. Carleton commanding,and marched with his regiment from San Francisco to New Mexico. Captain R. W. Wood, of this city, was in command of his company. He was honorably discharged in September, 1864, and soon after settled in Santa Fe. He was a brave and sturdy soidier and a man possessed of many shining qualities of heart and head. His sudden and untimely death is : sincerely mourned by many friends.
