We record under our obituary head thedeath of John L. Sleight, a native of thisTillage, but late cl Galveston, Texas. Fortyfive years ago Mr. Sleiglit left home a sturdy boy. of eighteen with little but native energy and pluck, to seek his fortunes. He went to the young and promising state of Texas, then a part of Mexico, and there up to the year of his death he has made it hishome, coming on generally in the summerseason to revisit the scenes and friends of youtli and boyhood. He became one of the well-known and successful business men of the South west, and was for many years a member of the prominent commercial firm of Hendley Co., Galveston, Texas, and with the successors of this house he was still connected at tlio time of his demise. He was a man of large physical proportions, (weighing 300 lbs when in full health) hehad a large and active brain well stored with practical self-obtained knowledge, a generous heart, and a determined will. His death resulted from paralysis of the throat and digestive organs. His remains wereintered in the family lot in Oakland cemetery of this village.
