Stow to Contract With Gov't for Open Space LandStow — The Stow Selectmen, after meeting with Town Counsel Thomas Morse Tuesday evening, voted to execute a contract with the United States of America for the acquisition and development of open space land, namely the land known as Fletcher Park (Gardner Hill).Last April, the Selectmen and the Conservation Commission were Informed that the 300 acre open space project had been approved by the federal agency HUD (Housing and Urban Development).This approval meant that HUD would reimburse Stow In an amount up to $77,500, or one-half of the project costs In acquiring 300 acres of the Gardner Hill area land.The State will pay 25 per cent of the cost, bringing total state and federal grants to approximately $112,000. Project costs are expected to approximate $150, 000, and will be expended to purchase a portion of the late O.D„Fletcher estate.The land Is centrallylocated in Stow on the north bank of the Assabet River and Includes * part of the Assabet Brook a- ’ long its northwest bound.Hie land will be immediately available for use by ^itizejis of Stow, as well as outsiders. Any facilities which are developed later; where a charge is made, will be made on a disproportionate basis, since Stow him sponsored the project and ’ imdeitidi6n~a_ partlal~cost of the development. Presently, there are four miles of paths through the woods, as well as fishing along the banks of the Assabet Biter.
