Diver To Quit After Mishap Pulled Unconscious From TankAfter a close brush with death, high diver Don Webb. 24, of William St., Weston, has decided to quit his dare-devil act at the end of this week, following pleas from his fiancee. Mary Ann Ray, of Belleville.For the past two weeks Webb has dived tl5 feet 'into six feet 'f water in a publicity stunt forSigning autographs a few 1 minutes before his narrow escape, stunt diver Don Webb has now decided to earn his 'living, not risk it.a North York appliance dealer.On Monday night, Webb leap* ed backward off a small platform at Lawrence Ave. and Dnfferla St.. turned a somersault in the air and landed on his back in the pool.He escaped with only a bruised back and explained later that he made a poor approach and should have landed feet first.Webbs brother Gerald. 28, also a diver, said he knew something was wrong when Donald hit the water. He jumped into the pool and pulled his unconscious brother to safety.Webb was on the bottom of the pool for less than a minute and none of the 150 persons witnessing the dive knew anything was amiss nntil he was pulled from the water.Regaining consciousness without artificial respiration, he wa* later examined by a doctor, who • said he had suffered only astrained back.In his first week on the job Don dived from 95 feet. Last week he moved up to the 109 and finally the 115-foot level*. In diving from this height, h« claims he •ttains the speed of 81 miles an hour. The tank ha* a 20-foot diameter.Webb is a salesman and performs the high diving feat as a part-time job. That’s it, Don said afterwards. Mary Ann ha* been insisting I quit. I’m through the end of this week.’* He said he would devote full time to being a salesman.
