Gen. Gordon, a British officer who has written a book on the sikhs, the cele brated fighters of India, says that the signs by which you may know a sikh are these. He never cuts his hair, but wears his beard looped up over his ears; he never smokes or touches tobacco, be cause that is the privilege of the Moham medan, but he is allowed to drink spir its and is a great consumer of opium. Finally, he must have about his person five K’s, which Gen. Gordon thus exum erates: Kees (long hair or beard; kangi (comb), to secure the hair tied up in a knot on top of the head; kaceh (breeches reaching to the knee); kard (knife), and Kirpan (sword).
