HEARING,The County Commissioners gave a hearing at the Shirley Casino yesterday to W.R. Rice and others on the proposed extension of the Crest over the railroad to Winthrop Highlands. It will he tc-tneinhered that the Selectmen laid out the street this springlmt their action was not ratified a-t a Town^Meeting, the vote being 'seven for and thirty-seven against the proposed improvement. Mr. Rice not owning the land where the proposed extension was to be ihade and it being quite mperative tint l/e should have a road to his property at Winthrop Highlands and there being W objection Trum the abutters,-he was compelled to ask the ( ommission-ers today out the road.- 1 he hearing was largely attended by those interested, including Messrs. Win. 11. Riee, -Horace WhitnevCGCE. Robinson. E. T. Cowdrey, David Floyd* *Jd, M. Barrett, II. IE Hutchins. ,I. II. dessop, Geo. W. Wyman, ,1.11. Whitman, Dr. Hull, F. L. Wood-•iSvard, Cfvas.Webber, A.X.Tewksbury,Capt. Cordis, John Ritchie,« George Turnbull, Justin Whitney, Alvin Whitney and,others. The chairman read the petition- which' called for the hearing, after which Mr. John Rowell, Jr., who appeared tor the remonstrants (John Ritchie and others), read a petition which was numerously signed by taxpayers and residents of Win-thfop. * The Commissioners then proceeded to view the premises, and on their return Mr. Z, C. Beaumont, who appeared dor the petitioners, called the first witness, H. T. Whitman of the firm of Whitman Breck, civil engineers, who, explained the plans of the road. In view of the reports which had been circulated as to the expense of building the road lie had had estimates made as to the actual cost, and Messrs. Ross i Harris were willing to huild'-the bridge and bulkhead for $32o0 and Mr. Phipps’ estimate for filling Vas $400. He said these were by no means the lowest estimates and it called for the best of work and ..material. They had at present about four miles of excellent roads built |at the Highlands ,and the taxable buildings at present erected was about 82500.Alvin Whitney and Dr. Hull both testified as to the danger of the present roac and necessity of a bridge being built.J. H. Jessop said that lie should estimate that 1 GOO teams passed over the presen dangerous road the last two Sundays am saidi there was no doubt of the importance of the 'road and it wmuld be a great improvement and a public benefit.In n a ,1, nr in ATr''Ttoaiitnnnt.
