East Side...understand it, the Broiler Festival had to do with the advance made in the raising of chickens. Mr. Whitten's speech was 9’/2 legal size pages in length, and was single spaced. The approximate number of words in the Congressman's speech was 4500, perhaps a few more. Of those words, not over 200 were devoted to poultry. The balance of his talk was given to such subjects as: Destruction of Constitution, Chief Justice Warren, Decision of the Supreme Court, Facts About Russia, Action at little Rock, Civil Rights Law, Its Danger,' and, finally, We Are Right! At first I was confused by all this, wondering what in ■ the name of Heaven Justice Warren, Russia, and Little Rock had to do with growing chickens at Forest, Mississippi. (And I still don't know.) But one thing I've decided about the ' chicken talk at Forest, and it is this: In November I'm due to speak at Dillard University and I have elected to speak on my second favorite subject, Democracy and Sins, Both Of Which I'm For. (My first favorite subject, naturally, is me.) And I was having a bit of trouble in developing my talk, but after reading the talk by an important Congressman, and noting how he developed it, I will give the first five minutes to Democracy and sins, and the other fifty minutes to raising chickens, their effect on Supreme Court Justices, Communism, and integration of public schools in Arkansas.I only wish I had the courage to mention the Constitution of the U S., but I'm afraid it's subsursive nowadays. At the risk of. offending someone, and may. Heaven forbid, I am inclined to wonder about several things here in Mississippi. Among those things I wonder about is the Cerebral Palsy drive, and its drive for $200,000 during the current year. At the present rate the state will have 240 cerebral palsy babies born this year. (I would like it understood that I think everything possible should be done for these children.) To the best of my knowledge there isn't a CP clinic in the state for Negroes, and surely some of the expected 240 will be Negro. What's to happen to them? Are they given treatment at .separate but equal clinics, and, if so, where? It was interesting, and heartening, to note that The Dupont Nemours Foundation of Delaware is to sponsor a statewide workshop for handicapped children in the state next year. The news story finished in this way: All agencies and individuals concerned with handicapped children are invited to attend the workshop. The entire cost will be paid by theDelaware firm.I wonder if the yyord All inchyjp Negroes who are handicapped? I hope tftere isig d^crjMination jn the matter of help for ALL cMWren, n6t tfiit Tcare for discrimination in any other way, but lik$ $ person with a concern for humanity wrote me: 'I feel straggly about this matter of equal facilities when it involves tax monies or donations, especially when those donations are given in the name of Foundations that DO NOT discriminate in the matter of helping humanity .. ALL mankind.End of that sermon, except for this point; If I've offend-ded someone by wondering about this matter, I hope they're so badly offended they will do something about it in behalf of ALL persons, regardless of their flavor, whether it be chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla.Book Review...fropi which he was graduated in 1925.
