A TRAGEDY AT BERNICE.George JacKson, an Aged Miner Shot to Death July Fourth.WOMAN SHOT IN THE HIP.r Mrs. A.L Johnson the Victim ol a Shoot-Iinf Accident. P. J. Smith Narrowly Escapes Losing Both Eyes. Ex-Judge John S. Line ShocKed by Lightning.* Another tragedy was added to the list at this place Friday night, July ,4th when (1(H). Jackson an aged mi-1 ner who had been working here for j the past four months was shot und ! fataly wounded by Peter Ritzcoski.| About midnight of the 4th Jackson I and three others went to the house i of ltitzooskic, after they had been J drinking more or less, and demand-^ j ed drink. Ritzcoskie who it ap-! pears had been running a speak easy 11 during the day, refused to give them anything. This led to the exchanging of hot words which resulted inRiztcoskie and another man in the house putting Jackson and his companions out. Ritzcoskie then step-ed out on the porch and tired four shots one of the bullets striking Jackson on the thigh and taking an upward course penetrated a vital spot in the abdomen. Nearby neighbors hearing Jackson’s groans came to his assistance and carried him to his loarding house. lr. Camp belle was summoned at once und after vainly trying to locate the bullet he was placed on the morning train and sent to the Sayre Hospital but died while being taken from the train. Ritzcoskie was arrested on the charge of murder at noon the following day by H. VV. Taylor and F. T. McMahon, Coal and Iron policemen, and taken before ’Squire Lawrence at Dushore and given a hearing where he confessed to tiring the fntai shot but claims it was during a light and be only intended to scute the men away. He was committed to the county jail to await the action of the grand jury. Soon after the hearing Taylor and McMahon hurried their prisoner into a closed carriage and started for Laporte and Ritzcoskie was soon under lock and key, thus j in about twenty hours from the time I In* tired the fatal shot lie was safely | behind prison burs.The prisoner is an ordinary looking poiander of about 4f years of j age and speaks broken English, he s a wife and five or six children, and had worked in the mines here for about six months.
